Living in a city w 13 000 000 million ppl (that just being the most central parts, counting the entire Tokyo district it’s more like 35 000 000 (!!) ), it’s easy to think you would get stressed out w all of the ppl everywhere, trying to keep up with the pace. On the contrary! I have never felt this comfortable… anywhere! Knowing they are so many ppl, they’ve adapted and developed a unique skill. They are so freakin organized it’s scary! In Sweden, everyone just complains and nothing is done to solve the problems. Here, everything just works. Everyone knows that you walk down the stairs on the left side and up on the right in order to avoid collision. You always stand on the left side on the escalators letting the ones in more of a hurry pass u on the right. Waiting for the subway you form small queues all along the platforms where the doors are to open. Neat and simple. The rules aren’t written anywhere, everyone just does it. Getting on the bus or train in Sweden ppl cut in front of you, push and elbow you, thinking they’re better than you. A freakin witch-hunt! Everyone is just annoyed and unfriendly. Everything but peaceful. If someone contrary to expectation were to step on your shoes or elbow you over here, they politely apologize.
When walking around in stores in Japan you can actually stroll around and enjoy the experience. When trying clothes on, the shop attendant shows you to the dressing room and tells u to “take your time”, even though the queue is long as fuck. They take it all w ease! It’s nothing to get stressed about! Ppl don’t look at you strangely if you pass the ice cream counter in the grocery store for the 10th time. You can contemplate your options thoroughly (which suits be perfectly since I often have a hard time choosing stuff; What if that other one tastes better? What am I really craving?). The book stores are again a great example, they are designed for you to take your time. You don’t need a chair to sit on in order to rest, the relaxed atmosphere makes that unnecessary. It’s hard to explain, but it’s all a pretty strange mix. Everyone knows their place. What if everyone was this disciplined! There is still hope for humanity, I tell u!
